Hi Elephant Girl! Thanks for the comment about the SWM blogs I've been writing. I think this video is very informative, and says more than I could say in response to some of the points you make in your comment:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sjARiYEpEMQ

I am very interested in what's happening with the current debate in America because I have a "preexisting condition" (my knee) and have already been denied coverage by the private insurance companies that you have praised. This happened in 2003, a period when I was living in America and working as the director of a non-profit museum. Health insurance came as part of the job package I was given, but I was informed by the insurance company that my knee would not be covered. I suppose that I value patient care over profits when it comes right down to it.

Can a government-run health care program be effective? Well, it seems that the American government does quite a lot very well. Most people would agree that the American military is the strongest in the world. There are funding problems with Medicare, but generally speaking, most people (including a few family members) love the care it provides. I have a friend, a guy who was in the marines quite a few years ago, who now has cancer. He gets his health care through the VA and is very satisfied with his treatment.

Take care.

Oh Troy, you got this one sooo wrong. I guess you are just not that good with the numbers - you are an excellent writer though and I always enjoy reading your well-written blogs.
Here is some data: 46 million Americans are uninsured (a lot of them by choice, think the young and invincible who don't think anything will ever happen to them and if it does they will deal with it then), 28% of Americans are on Medicare or Medicaid and the rest (around 190 million people) have excellent private insurance that is the best in the world. In countries with socialized medicine with private insurance supplement only up to 10% of the population takes/needs/can afford private insurance. If only 10% of Americans took private insurance (you do the math) of course the insurance companies would be out of business and many many people out of jobs that they have been doing for years. BTW, do you really think the government can run the healthcare business better and more efficiently than shrewed, top notch American businessmen??? If you think it is possible then maybe you can answer this question: why does Medicare and Medicaid account for over 40% of total health care spend if it insures only 28% of the population!!!
